Thia is a wonderfull slow cooked fragrant and warming dish, normally provided for celebrations such as Eid and weddings by the Cape Malay Muslim community in the Bo Kaap, on the slopes of signal hill in Cape Town. The inhabitants of the Bo Kaap generally originate from slaves and political dissidents and were not wealthy people, so this dish was generally reserved for special occasions.
This is a hearty, thick, and deeply comforting curry with a rich tomato and spice base, icluding coriander, cumin, safron, fennel, cardamom and cinnamon. Not overly hot, the Cape Malay cuisine tends to be highly flavoured but more subtle than a traditional Durban Indian dish.
